Maplewood, NJ

Maplewood is a very quaint residential community with a charming downtown area that can best be compared to a small New England village. All of the businesses in the downtown area are small family owned operations with the exception of one King's Supermarket.

The population is approximately 24K and is very diverse. The majority of the people relocating here are from Manhattan, Brooklyn, Hoboken, Jersey City and other parts of NJ, as well as a good number of those who are relocating from other states for jobs in Manhattan.

There are many styles of homes in this town but most are from the 1920's with Colonials being the most prevalent architectural style. The town does, however, have quite a number of stone houses (Tudors, a few Victorians and a small number of ranches and split levels).

The convenience of the commute to NYC is a highlight. The Midtown Direct train is approximately a 30-minute ride into Penn Station. We also have direct trains to Hoboken, which allow for an easy commute via the PATH trains to lower Manhattan. In addition, we have a jitney service that flows throughout Maplewood allowing for easy access to the train station for those who live a distance from the village. The jitney has a very modest cost and picks up and drops off at certain stops during the morning and evening rush hours. This is a huge convenience.

Maplewood and South Orange share one school district. There are 5 elementary schools, 2 middle schools and 1 high school. Parents are quite happy with the schools. I always tell my clients to speak to people who have kids in the schools in order to get some "hands on" feedback. It always turns out that the parents who have kids in each and every one of our elementary schools, have nothing but very positive experiences to share. I can also set up school tours to allow for some real first hand information. It is critical that parents be involved in their child's education no matter where they attend school. Columbia High School consistently turns out top achievers who go on to many of the top Universities in this country.

We are very proud of our students!

Maplewood prides itself on being a wonderful place to raise a family. There are many child and family friendly activities. We also have seven parks, a municipal pool, tennis and basketball courts, and lots of playgrounds. In addition, the South Mountain Reservation, which is a 2200 acre nature preserve is located partially within Maplewood. There are many hiking trails, streams, a running path and a dog run. Many people actually cross country ski or snow shoe there when the snow conditions allow for it.

Maplewood is located 7 miles west of Newark Airport and 24 miles from Manhattan. The town is convenient to the major roads: Garden State Parkway, New Jersey Turnpike, Route 78, Route 280 and Route 24.
